Having been Nansana Municipality area MP since the year 2016, Nsereko Musoke Wakayima has finally signalled readiness to call it a day and let go. Sources close to him say that, having tried and failed to convince Bobi Wine on the need to let him retain his seat on the NUP ticket, Wakayima realized he was fighting a losing battle. He realized he needs a lot of money to get back to Parliament, which he didn’t readily have.
In their private meeting, Wakayima went on his knees and explained to Mr. Wine how financial misfortunes had befallen him since becoming MP but the Principal didn’t agree with him. Instead, Bobi contemptuously looked at him as he explained his predicament.
Wakayima explained to the NUP Principal how his first term (2011-2016) was cut short and disrupted when Justice Steven Kavuma forced him out of Parliament and gave the seat to NRM’s Robert Kasule Sebunya on a silver plate just like that.
Then the subsequent one he got was equally disrupted as his opponents kept dragging him to Court. He told Bobi about the financial problems he got into as a result of those endless court petitions.
Wakayima, who has been in opposition for an eternity and was among the earliest established politicians to embrace Bobi in 2017 when he had just become Kyaddondo East MP, told the Principal about the financial difficulties involved in securing the NUP flag bearership.
Saying he was full of financial exhaustion and political fatigue, Wakayima requested Mr. Wine to ring-fence the position for him so that he concentrates his energy and resources on beating off whoever NRM fronts.
Bobi Wine wasn’t helpful as he only told Wakayima to make an appointment with the Party’s Electoral Management Committee (EMC) and narrate to them his predicament. He told him his hands are tied as the final decision rests with the EMC and not him as a person.
In the end, Wakayima walked away broken and totally frustrated. In the days that followed he convened meetings with a few trusted campaigners and political allies in Nansana (where he started out as Wakiso district Councillor before becoming town council Mayor) and the only consensus that emerged was that he stood no chance at retaining the NUP flag since several Kavule decision makers had started showing open preference for ex-NBS journalist Zambali Mukasa Blasio.
That is how Wakayima ended up not turning up at Kavule to pick expression of interest forms for the position of Nansana Municipality MP Seat (the other being Veronica Nanyondo of Bukomansimbi). He has since switched off his phones to minimize interaction with voters who are always fond of free-loading at the expense of their elected leaders.
His bowing out leaves Zambali, who was accompanied by Joel Ssenyonyi on his Kavule nomination day, with clearer chance to become the next MP for Nansana. The other contenders like singer Big Eye and Kana Kambata are already being persuaded by key decision makers at Kavule to eat a humble pie and consider standing for lower level positions of being Councillors.
