The revival of cultural institutions and kingdoms in Uganda has borne fruit, leading to significant improvements in cultural activities and economic development. What many once doubted has now proven true—these institutions are not only alive but thriving, contributing immensely to the country’s growth.
Robert Ssebunya, the former chairman of Uganda Red Cross and Senior Presidential Advisor, credits President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his persistence in reinstating the kingdoms. “It was a battle, but President Museveni’s vision for peace and respect for Uganda’s heritage has paid off,” Ssebunya said.
When the idea was first proposed, some feared that the kingdoms would collapse within six months. But today, these institutions are a testament to the country’s resilience and growth. “The cultural revival has helped lift the economy, bringing communities together and enabling local development,” added Ssebunya.
One notable example is Buganda Kingdom, which has set a standard for economic development. Through voluntary contributions like oluwalo, the kingdom has funded significant projects, including health facilities and infrastructure, benefiting locals and Ugandans abroad. “Their efforts should inspire other kingdoms to take up similar initiatives,” Ssebunya said.
The Ministry of Labour, Gender, and Social Development, under President Museveni’s instructions, recently held a workshop to unite cultural leaders from across the country. Ssebunya addressed the gathering, urging leaders to continue working for the welfare of their people. “Kingdoms must embrace development and support government initiatives such as the Parish Development Model,” he stressed.
Ssebunya’s call for collaboration among kingdoms echoes an African proverb, that “Unity is strength.”
Together, these cultural institutions are not only preserving Uganda’s heritage but are also driving its economic prosperity. (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
