According to Speaker Anita Among, some key government officials from Western Uganda can no longer comfortably travel to and safely stay to spend say a weekend in their constituencies because of too much pressure the ordinary people are mounting on them regarding the ongoing political persecution of Dr. Kizza Besigye.
Speaking during the Tuesday plenary session, Anita Among (in a bid to impress it to Justice Minister Mao that it was no longer business as usual) referred to ICT Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi as one such key government officials who can’t comfortably travel to and stay in his constituency because the ordinary people in Kigezi are angry and very critical of how the government of President Museveni has continued persecuting Dr Kizza Besigye, by preventing him from leaving prison, even when he is clearly ailing and is grievously ill.
Mao had tried playing down Besigye’s situation by claiming that KB’s health condition was only worsening because of the hunger strike he commenced upon last Wednesday. The Speaker the ordinary people in Kigezi now perceive big men like Chris Baryomunsi as being part of the broader GoU conspiracy to liquidate their son Dr. Kizza Besigye.
Anita Among didn’t disclose details of the Baryomunsi dilema but its clear from several whatsapp groups of Kigezi-hailing Ugandans that ordinary people from there are increasingly becoming angry and disgruntled over the manner in which Dr. Besigye (who treated Museveni and other bush war fighters without ever demanding payment) has continued to be persecutted. This hostility is visible and very conspiceous even on whatsapp groups on which Dr. Baryomunsi is a member.
In a related development, the prisons spokesperson Frank Baine corwardized and pulled out of the pre-arranged radio debate which had been scheduled between him and one of the very lethal Besigye lawyers by the names of Sam Muyizi.
It was to be on Radio One on Monday but Baine became incommunicado and never communicated anything to the moderator Kenneth Lukwago Anderson. Muyizi ended up appearing alone and leveraged the opportunity to demonize the government of President Museveni whose officials like Chris Baryomunsi he portrayed as heartless outlaws who have no respect for Dr. Besigye’s right to live.
Muyizi said Dr. KB, who has been his client since 2005 when he had just left school, had sent to them a handwritten chit as his lawyers making it clear he declined to give Baryomunsi any audience because he perceived his visit as an insult and further abuse of his rights as a human being.
Muyizi wondered how prison authorities would alloew the unwanted Baryomunsi any audience with Dr. Besigye at the time his lawyers continue to be constrained from interacting with him as often as would be desired. Muyizi also said the prison officials are nervous about Dr. Besigye dying in their hands and are very uncomfortable about continuing to have him in their custody given the frail state he is in.
