Even though despised by some for being a man with modest education, Kasambya MP and PLU Secretary General David Kabanda is a skillful fighter who knows how to effectively weaponize intrigue as a tool to isolate and destroy his own adversaries. He has been at war with Information Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, branding him a social climber and an opportunist who is out to merely blackmail the President to avoid being dropped from Cabinet.
It all started with Baryomunsi’s last Saturday Capital Gang appearance where he made it clear that, despite being CDF and Museveni’s son, Gen MK doesn’t speak for the GoU. He advised the public to disregard the First Son’s controversial tweets and take them as mere jest. Kabanda and many among the PLU fraternity took this to be derogatory remarks, aimed at belittling the CDF.
They declared online war on Chris Baryomunsi who during a subsequent interview with AIIJ chief journalist Solomon Sserwanja fired back describing the PLU SG as a man of modest education and therefore unworthy of the attention he was trying to get. He dismissed the Kasambya County MP as a mere attention seeker, devoid of intellectual sophistication.
Kabanda has since fired back describing Baryomunsi as a mere ‘nurse and medical broker’ as opposed to being the high-credentialed medical doctor he claims to be. In his latest tweet, Kabanda dismissively refers to Baryomunsi’s claim to have been well brought up by his parents. Kabanda says that crediting his parents for having raised him well into a young man who kept away from alcohol was a veiled barb CB intended to direct at MK’s parents-namely Gen YK Museveni and his wife Janet-by implying that they didn’t bring him up well.
Kabanda adds that Baryomunsi should prepare to explain himself someday as to why he had to have guts to direct such unprovoked attacks and demonization at the President and his wife over personal disagreements between him (Baryomunsi) and their son Gen MK.
Baryomunsi had also told Sserwanja that David Kabanda is intellectually too deficient to deserve a comprehensive response because he is a mere S6 drop out who can’t manage sustaining intellectual argument with PhD holders like himself. In his latest X post, Kabanda responded to this too by wondering why the same Minister is always bowing before Gen Salim Saleh, who equally is an S6 drop out. Kabanda demands that Baryomunsi must apologize to all S6 dropouts including Gen Saleh, the President’s all-powerful brother. He vows to keep giving CB his ‘food’ should he not cease and desist from directing his tweets, which the PLU fraternity perceives as aimed at belittling the CDF.
Renowned for taking no prisoners, even when he was still a young man on the Kampala streets struggling to make ends meet (those years before becoming MP in 2021), Kabanda also uses the same X post to challenge Baryomunsi to demonstrate his great credentials as the eminent scientist he portrays himself to be by listing the peer-reviewed scholarly publications and scientific discoveries and inventions he has ever come up with, as opposed to merely bragging and demanding to be respected as such.
By dragging in the First Lady, the President and Gen Salim Saleh, Kabanda is trying to open Baryomunsi up to new frontlines and in the process exhaust and expose him to levels of vulnerability which the increasingly bruised good doctor from Kanungu won’t be able to easily circumvent. That’s how David Kabanda has always fought his political wars and overcome would-be invincible adversaries since his much younger days as a student leader in Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) in the early 2010s.
