NUP’s head of political mobilisation Habib Buwembo, who a newspaper sometime back profiled as a Ugandan activist who calls prison his second home, has all of a sudden fallen silent.
Over the years, he has been jailed countless times over his relentless activism and street protests and was recently arrested during a NUP political activity in Mityana. He was arrested along with other NUP foot soldiers.
But upon being released, Buwembo (who has remained a rejected outsider even after formally joining the party’s NEC) just went to his Busega home and kept quiet from there. He never came to Kavule nor bother getting in touch with anyone.
All this has caused anxiety among key NUP apex decision makers who supporters have for months been accusing of undermining and sidelining Habib Buwembo.
Many especially in Rubaga South where he used to fight Joyce Nabbosa Sebugwawo and to stand on the FDC ticket those past years, expected Habib Buwembo to use his position as head mobilisation to get for them party tickets. Yet in actual sense he turned out to be so powerless to the extent that he couldn’t even influence the giving of the Rubaga South MP flag to himself. It was instead given to Ms Euginia Nassolo who replaced Aloysius Mukasa and went on to win on Thursday 15th January 2026.
“Everyone is worried that Habib Buwembo might have felt unwanted and is gradually losing interest in the NUP business and activities. They expected him to come to Kavule and table proposals on how the protest vote can be taken forward now that its time for the Kabanje [demand for the victory] phase. Instead, he is quiet, incommunicado and he continues to be unreachable even via telephone,” said a Kavule insider close to NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya.
