A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), that first step towards the 2026 general elections has now been taken with the release of a detailed roadmap for party activities.
From grassroots mobilization to the selection of candidates, the roadmap outlines key dates and processes that will shape the future of the party and, ultimately, the country’s leadership.
The process kicks off in April 2025 with the call for expressions of interest and nomination of candidates for local government positions. This will run until the end of May, accompanied by voter register displays and district conferences to harmonize leadership structures.
The party’s internal elections for Special Interest Group (SIG) committees at the village, parish, and district levels will also take place during this period.
By June, attention will shift to higher positions, with MPs, LC V Chairpersons, and City Mayors picking nomination forms and launching campaigns.
Their primaries will be followed by a crucial period in July when the NRM will endorse its flagbearers at different levels. The highlight of the internal elections will come in August when the party elects its presidential flagbearer, along with members of key executive committees.
From September 2025 to February 2026, candidates will embark on nationwide campaigns in preparation for the general elections, which will be conducted between January 12 and February 9, 2026, under the Independent Electoral Commission.
Once the elections are completed, the party will compile results in March and later focus on internal leadership positions, including the selection of parliamentary caucus leaders and representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly.
With this roadmap, the NRM has set the stage for an intense and strategic political season, signaling its readiness to compete and retain its dominance in Uganda’s political landscape.
