Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, a deputy spokesperson for the National Unity Platform (NUP) and a candidate for Nakawa East Member of Parliament, was officially nominated on Wednesday, despite facing fresh criminal charges and being held on remand at Luzira Prison.

Mufumbiro’s nomination was confirmed by the Electoral Commission at the Kampala district nomination center Ntinda.

He was represented by outgoing Nakawa East MP Ronald Balimwezo, who is currently vying for the position of Kampala City Lord Mayor on the NUP ticket.

Speaking to journalists after the nomination, Balimwezo expressed appreciation to the Electoral Commission, saying it had fulfilled its duty by duly nominating Mufumbiro as a candidate for the Nakawa East parliamentary seat.

He noted that the process had been fair and in accordance with Article 80 of the Constitution of Uganda and the Parliamentary Elections Act, which outline the qualifications required for parliamentary candidates.

Balimwezo added that Mufumbiro had been cleared based on those legal provisions and extended his gratitude to the people of Nakawa East for their continued support.

He also acknowledged Mufumbiro’s wife, who served as his proposer, and another supporter named Wire, who seconded the nomination.

He thanked both for standing firmly with the candidate.

Earlier the same day, Mufumbiro appeared before Nakawa Grade One Magistrate Frank Nahamya to face new charges of incitement.

Prosecutors alleged that on September 4, 2025, in Kampala, he had encouraged NUP supporters to commit acts of violence against security officers.

Mufumbiro denied the charge, and the magistrate remanded him until November 6, 2025, pending the conclusion of police investigations.

These new accusations come in addition to earlier charges linked to alleged military-style training activities.

By press time, Mufumbiro was expected to appear later on Wednesday at Kawempe Magistrates Court alongside nine co-accused.

Despite his ongoing legal troubles, Mufumbiro’s successful nomination has been hailed by his supporters as a sign of political resilience.

With both the courts and the campaign trail ahead, his fate remains uncertain, but he is now officially in the race for Nakawa East MP.
