Naguru Voters Slam Electoral Commission, Boycott Re-Run Polls

In a scathing rebuke to the Electoral Commission, voters in Naguru I and Naguru II parishes stayed away from the polls en masse on March 12, rejecting the re-run election as a sham.
With only 600 of 46,723 registered voters casting ballots, the boycott was a clear protest against the Commission’s handling of the process.

The move is seen as a blow to the ruling NRM party, which was banking on the re-run to overturn Godfrey Luyombya’s win. NRM’s desperation to capture the City Hall speakership has been palpable, with the party pulling out all stops to unseat Luyombya, who emerged victorious with 5,066 votes.

Voters sent a strong message that they will not be swayed by what they perceive as a biased electoral process.

The low turnout has raised questions about the legitimacy of the re-run and put the Commission’s credibility on the spot.

Luyombya Poised for City Hall Speakership Showdown: Sources close to the NUP firebrand reveal he’s now on track to claim the top gunde, with his party holding a slender lead in the council. With the Lord Mayor in NUP’s kitty and 18 councilors backing him, Luyombya has the numbers to swing it in his favor. NRM’s 16 councilors might not be enough to stop the Luyombya juggernaut, especially if he can woo undecided members.

The math is simple: Luyombya needs to secure more than 50% of the votes to emerge victorious. As the current Nakawa Division Urban Council Speaker, he’s got the experience and the momentum.

NRM’s desperate bid to overturn his win only adds to the drama. Can they pull off a comeback, or is Luyombya’s City Hall coronation a done deal? The stage is set for a thrilling showdown!
