They say a good name is better than riches, and some names never fade from history.
On February 16, 2025, Uganda paused to honor the life and sacrifice of Archbishop Janani Luwum during the 48th annual St. Janani Luwum Day commemoration in Mucwini sub-county, Kitgum District.
The event drew thousands of pilgrims from across the nation, all gathered to remember a leader whose unwavering faith and courage continue to inspire.
In a message delivered by Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robina Nabbanja, President Yoweri Museveni praised Archbishop Luwum as “one of the most influential leaders of his time.” Museveni highlighted that Luwum’s impact was not confined to his spiritual role but was evident in his actions and steadfastness in the face of adversity. “His memory will always stand out and linger on us as a legacy for all leaders,” he remarked.
The commemoration featured a series of activities, including prayers, hymns, and cultural performances, reflecting the deep respect and admiration for Archbishop Luwum’s contributions to Uganda.
A 540-member choir, representing various dioceses across Northern Uganda, led the worship during the celebrations.
Nabanja revealed that plans are underway to transform Archbishop Luwum’s burial site into an international pilgrimage center an initiative which aims to preserve his legacy and provide a place for reflection and inspiration for future generations.
The 48th St. Janani Luwum Day commemoration serves as a reminder of the archbishop’s unwavering commitment to his faith and his country, even unto death.
