Appreciating thousands of negatively-impacted customers for their understanding and patience, NWSC’s Director Communications Sam Apedel has explained what had caused the huge water supply crisis the residents of Mukono, Wakiso and parts of Kampala (especially Nakawa Division) endured over the weekend going into the new week.
In a media interview, Apedel explained that disruptions in constant flow and supply of water into people’s homes had resulted from unexpected breaking of one of the key supply pipes at the Katosi site a few days ago. But gratefully, Apedel explained, the problem had finally been fixed. He assured all NWSC customers to expect full restoration of the service in the next 24 hours.
The supply crisis had left thousands of Kampala Metropolitan area residents with no option but to part with as much as between Shs1,000 and Shs2,000 per jerrycan of water, which business-minded residents had resorted to selling to families to mitigate the crisis as water had gone off and supply ceased since Friday 18th October. Poorer households had resorted to joining long queues as natural water wells in especially the Metropolitan area’s slums areas.
The most affected were the Metropolitan residents in neighbourhoods like Katosi, Kisoga, Seeta, Mbalala, Sonde, Namanve, Kiwanga, Kauga, Nabuti and Nantabulirirwa in Mukono; Kireka, Kamuli, Kyaliwajjala, Bulindo, Nsasa, Mulawa, Nabusugwe, Kitukutwe, Najjera, Lutete, Matugga and Gayaza in Wakiso and as well as Naalya, Ntinda, Kisaasi, Mutungo, Kitintale and Mbuya in Kampala’s Nakawa Division.
The crisis caused local elected areas leaders in the affected areas to reflect on the need to urgently prioritize funding for maintenance operations for wells and other natural water sources existing in the respective communities-so that on the day NWSC supply systems get disrupted, community members have a fall-back position.
