The race for the Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament is taking shape, with incumbent Anita Among seeking re-election. Josephine Ibaseret, MP-elect for Agule County, has thrown her weight behind Among, citing her exceptional leadership skills.
_”As new entrants, we also want to benefit from her extraordinary leadership,”_ Ibaseret said, expressing confidence in Among’s ability to steer the House. Among, who represents Bukedea District Women Constituency, has been praised for her dedication to parliamentary work and her commitment to uplifting her constituents.
Among’s bid for re-election has received a boost from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), which has endorsed her as its flag bearer for the Speaker’s seat. The party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) has also endorsed Thomas Tayebwa as Deputy Speaker, signaling continuity in the House leadership.
If re-elected, Among has pledged to maintain stability in Parliament and ensure alignment with the ruling party’s legislative agenda.
The election for the Speaker’s seat is expected to be a closely contested affair, with other candidates, including Persis Namuganza, throwing their hats into the ring. However, with the NRM’s endorsement and support from MPs like Ibaseret, Among remains a strong contender for the position.
