In the corridors of Makerere University’s Department of Mathematics, time has always been a precious currency. For over 34 years, Mr. W.G. Naigambi, fondly known as WGN, has exemplified the essence of dedication, discipline, and academic excellence.
As he now steps into a new chapter of life, colleagues, students, and friends gather to celebrate his remarkable legacy.
A man whose presence in the department was synonymous with punctuality, WGN set a standard that few could match. His workdays always began as early as 6 AM, and though the official day ended at 5 PM, his remained open-ended, dictated only by the demands of duty.
It was not just about keeping time, but keeping standards. So deeply ingrained was his discipline that colleagues would often say, “If you do it like that, WGN won’t be happy with it,” a testament to the benchmark he set in both academics and professional ethics.
Though he may not have taught every student directly, his impact was undeniable. His meticulously prepared lecture notes and sample questions became foundational resources, shaping generations of learners.
So well-structured were his materials that they evolved into lecture books now widely used within the department, a legacy that will endure long beyond his departure.
Beyond mathematics, WGN was a mentor in life. He instilled financial prudence among his peers, famously advising, “First save before you spend.” While many struggled to live by this principle, they continued striving toward it, inspired by his example. His wisdom extended to various aspects of life, making him not just a lecturer but a trusted advisor.
As the University bids farewell to one of its most distinguished figures, the impact of WGN’s service remains profound. His lessons will live on, not only in academic texts but in the professional and personal lives of those he mentored.
The Department of Mathematics, Makerere University, and the countless individuals he influenced extend their deepest gratitude to Mr. W.G. Naigambi, and his contributions will leave an indelible mark.
As he embarks on a new journey, he does so with the knowledge that his legacy is firmly cemented in the institution he served so diligently. (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
