Sorrow has gripped Kavule and Nakawa East, after Edith Katende Mufumbiro, wife to NUP Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, April 8, 2026 morning.
Her death has been confirmed by NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi in a brief but emotional message shared on X (formerlyTwitter), where he described her as a dear sister and comrade.
Edith died shortly after 3:00am following a prolonged battle with cancer. Her passing comes at a deeply painful time for the family, as her husband remains in detention at Luzira Upper Prison and was unable to be by her side in her final moments.
Waiswa has been in custody over charges of unlawful drilling allegedly committed in February last year. However, Kyagulanyi insists that on the day in question, the Deputy spokesperson and former MP candidate for Nakawa East was at the Uganda Cancer Institute attending to his critically ill wife.
Kyagulanyi said Waiswa had made several attempts to secure bail, including pleas to be released so he could care for his ailing wife, but these were not granted.
The loss has left colleagues and supporters mourning, with many describing it as a tragedy marked not only by death, but by separation.
Kyagulanyi called for strength for the bereaved family, particularly for Waiswa as he endures both personal loss and continued detention.
“May God grant the family, especially our brother Waiswa, the strength he needs at this time,” he said.
Edith’s death has added a somber moment within NUP, as the party comes to terms with the loss of one of its own under difficult circumstances.
