Key M7 Critic Prof Mahmood Mamdani’s 33-Year-Old Son Slated to Become New York City Mayor

There is growing unease within some political circles in Kampala following news that Zohran Mamdani, son of veteran Ugandan scholar and long-time government critic Prof Mahmood Mamdani, is on the verge of becoming the next Mayor of New York City.
Zohran, 33, emerged the frontrunner in this week’s Democratic primary elections, holding a commanding lead over former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, according to official vote tallies from the New York City Board of Elections.
While final confirmation awaits completion of the ranked-choice tabulation process, Zohran’s margin is already being viewed as decisive. Given the dominance of the Democratic Party in New York and the U.S. at large, winning the party’s nomination is widely seen as a clear path to the office.
This development has sparked significant interest in Uganda, not only for the family connection, but also because of the political history between Zohran’s father and President Yoweri Museveni.
Prof Mahmood Mamdani, a renowned political theorist and historian, is one of Uganda’s most respected intellectuals, belonging to the Apolo Nsibambi generation of thinkers and has taught at universities across the world, including Makerere and Columbia University.
Until recently, he was Director of the Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR), where he mentored a new generation of Pan-African scholars.
Throughout his academic career, Mamdani has been sharply critical of the Museveni government’s economic and governance policies. He has opposed the neoliberal agenda Uganda adopted under the guidance of the World Bank and IMF, especially during the 1990s, when the government liberalised education and removed state sponsorship for university students.
He has also criticised Uganda’s shift toward a life presidency (when age limit was scraped from Uganda’s constitution), the weakening of public institutions, and the growing influence of private capital in sectors once considered public.
His analysis, published in respected international journals and newspapers, has shaped how global audiences view African governance and continues to influence development policy discussions.
Zohran was born in Kampala and moved to the U.S. as a child. He has built his political identity in New York City, representing the Astoria district in the State Assembly since 2020.
His mayoral campaign drew strong support from progressive groups, offering a platform focused on economic justice, housing reform, public transportation, and childcare access.
He has proposed policies such as rent freezes, free citywide bus service, and city-owned grocery stores aimed at lowering the cost of living in one of the world’s most expensive cities.
Backed by the Democratic Socialists of America and prominent politicians in the States, like Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders, Zohran has positioned himself as a new voice for working-class New Yorkers.
His platform resonated with voters struggling in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, widespread inflation, and rising housing costs.
Although critics have raised concerns about his relative inexperience in executive roles, his electoral performance has proven strong public support for his ideas (particularly among younger and lower-income voters).
Beyond the symbolism of a Ugandan-born candidate winning a major election in the States, the development is being interpreted more broadly in the Pearl’s political context. Observers note that this may place a spotlight on Uganda’s domestic governance record at a time when international scrutiny is already increasing.
Just months ago, the U.S. President, Donald Trump announced a suspension of certain categories of foreign aid to Uganda and several other African countries, citing governance and human rights concerns. This reflects a growing sensitivity within the States’ foreign policy to democratic backsliding and internal repression in recipient countries.
While the mayor of New York City does not directly influence U.S foreign policy, the symbolic power of that office is significant. New York is home to the United Nations, numerous global media outlets, and influential advocacy groups.
A mayor with personal ties to Uganda and a history of social justice activism could elevate human rights and governance issues affecting African countries onto the international stage.
Analysts in Kampala suggest that this son of the land’s election could deepen the engagement of African diaspora voices in Western political spaces, possibly influencing narratives about democracy, corruption, and economic inequality back home.
It is worth noting that the political paths of Prof Mamdani and Museveni, once aligned during the 1970s exile years in Tanzania, began to diverge soon after Museveni came to power.
Mamdani’s critiques have been based not on partisan rivalry, but on deeply held convictions about justice, institutional reform, and inclusive development.
Now, his son’s likely entry into one of the most visible political offices in the world adds a new layer to that history. While there is no indication that Zohran intends to involve himself directly in Ugandan politics, the fact that he is the child of such a prominent Museveni critic cannot be ignored.
New York, after all, is not just another city, but a global stage, and its mayor commands a voice that resonates far beyond American borders.
