Oweek Sam Musoke Ssekajugo, a Buganda Lukiiko member who is also Kabaka Mutebi’s Envoy to the Netherlands, has come out to contradict the picture Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu painted about his former Deputy President Mathias Mpuuga during his Tuesday media event in Kampala.
In an audio recording released and circulated on several opposition-affiliated WhatsApp groups in Kampala throughout the Tuesday night, Ssekajugo says he was prompted to say something after listening and watching Kyagulanyi tell so many lies about Mpuuga.
Ssekajugo says he was a personal friend who fallen MP Mohammed Ssegirinya sent for through his PA called Mr. Kawempe. He was at Kigo prison where Ssekajugo travelled after landing at Entebbe Airport. He says he came to Uganda specifically to meet Ssegirinya. This was in 2022 and Ssekajugo says that Ssegirinya revealed to him fellow political actors he believed had connived to have him die in prison and never wanted him out. That many of these are big men inside the NUP Secretariat and the deceased legislator never included Mpuuga on that list.
He says that gratefully, he spoke to Ssegirinya in the presence of Allan Ssewanyana, two prison warders and his PA Mr. Kawempe. That Ssegirinya enumerated people who wanted him out of the way urgently and Mpuuga’s name didn’t feature on that list but many NUP top leaders did.
In the same audio, Ssekajugo says Ssegirinya complained of neglect and made it clear the NUP party had abandoned them.
Ssekajugo says that Ssegirinya made it clear that he had no trust and confidence in lawyers affiliated to NUP and requested him to help them bring on board Mzee Radislaus Rwakafuzi, who had been a friend to both of them. Rwakafuzi is the veteran Besigye lawyer who has been ailing for some time. He these days lives quietly at his home in Makerere near LDC while receiving treatment at Nsambya hospital.
Ssekajugo says indeed, even when he was frail and unwell, Rwakafuzi accepted Ssegirinya’s request and appeared in Court, where he made submissions arguing for the two MPs’ bail, besides other defense lawyers. That eventually the duo got bail, something which Ssegirinya attributed to the role of Rwakafuzi more than any other lawyer. Ssekajugo says that even after being released, Ssegirinya made a video in which he thanked Rwakafuzi and himself in a special way. That all these things, as told to him by Ssegirinya while in Kigo prison, can be corroborated by one of Ssegirinya’s wives called Kanduho, Ssewanyana himself, his wife and Mr. Kawempe.
Ssekajugo says that he felt duty bound to set the record straight so that Kyagulanyi doesn’t get away with telling lies to demonize Mathias Mpuuga. He says that the day he visited Kigo, NUP Councilor Ali Kabogoza was also there with other Councilors though they weren’t permitted in the private meeting the two jailed MPs had with him.
Ssekajugo says that Ssewanyana has a duty to step forward and corroborate many of these things so that Kyagulanyi’s disinformation and fake news can be defeated. He adds that Katikkiro Peter Mayiga is another person Ssegirinya requested him to reach out to and ask him to become more outspoken in demanding for their release.
