Rtd Justice Steven Kavuma isn’t a stranger to controversies and the latest scandal reaching our desk is one that involves him being accused by members of his foster family (guys who brought him without any biological relationship) of using his past powerful positions in government to fraudulently assume ownership of the 4 acre property in the prime Kampala neighborhood of Mutundwe. There lived an elderly lady called Margaret Nanozi Ddungu who owned this property but the same old lady was fond of younger Kavuma and brought him to grow up under her care as a foster mother. Much later on when she became ill, Kavuma came and forcefully took her away to be nursed at his plush home. He was still DCJ and therefore lived in a decent home. Led by Ronald Sebirumbi and Jaria Nabwami, late Nanozi’s relatives (she died in September 2017 under Kavuma’s care) protested but Kavuma used his guards, overpowered them and took their auntie. Upon her death, it emerged she had given a portion of her Mutundwe estate to Kavuma who Sebirumbi says has already sold that piece of land: “And now wants to confiscate the remaining land plus the late Nanozi’s house. He is almost succeeding because he has deployed there security making the place inaccessible to us.” Kavuma is already operating his charcoal business from the land and other people validly related to late Nanozi can’t access it anymore. They have now resolved to drag Kavuma to court accusing him of land grabbing. In a phone interview with this news website, Kavuma confirmed being aware of the dispute and added that he isn’t afraid of anything as his legal team is ready to fight it out with Sebirumbi and Nabwami who are represented by prominent city lawyer Ladislaus Rwakafuzi. Kavuma was served court papers on 20th March and has 14 days within which to file his defense. Sebirumbi and Nabwami are partly emboldened by the fact that Gen Kale Kayihura who used to protect Justice Kavuma and creating a sense of untouchability and invincibility around him is no more the IGP meaning the law can now take its course without any undue interference by armed men. The duo is certain that once the court issues an order, Kavuma will have to vacate their property as he has doesn’t have any other general to now run to for protection.
