DF Secretary General Mike Mabikke has contemptuously reacted to efforts by Kavule-based NUP to find a strong enough candidate to front in Makindye East, an area he represented between 2001 and 2011.
In 2011, Mabikke went to stand for Kampala Lord Mayorship seat which was taken by Erias Lukwago.
He returned in 2016 and 2021 but was unsuccessful in Makindye East. He is now back once again and there are indications he is among the frontrunners for the seat.
He is understood to have benefited from former area MP Ibrahim Kasozi’s decision to go for Lord Mayorship as opposed to once again trying to get back his Seat which, in 2021, he unexpectedly lost to Derrick Nyeko who had been a parish councillor at Makindye division Council.
As he prepares to be nominated and go on to work towards victory, Mabikke now says he isn’t bothered because victory is going to be his regardless of who Kavule fronts.
With Derrick Nyeko bowing out, only to rejoin the race days later, Mabikke has already benefited by receiving defectors from among those pro-Nyeko foot soldiers who got tired of the NUP confusion and felt that their man was unfairly treated by Kavule.
Nyeko had Councillor slots aspirants he proposed but who were disregarded by Kavule and the party tickets went to aspirants outside the incumbent MP’s orbit. This made him to feel unwanted and he subsequently bowed out.
Ali Nganda Mulyanyama, who all along had been eyeing Makindye West, relocated and printed posters for Makindye East. He justified his decision by saying that without him coming in as a dangerous substitute, Mabikke or the NRM candidate was going to defeat NUP and take Makindye East.
Then as of Monday evening, online reports emerged showing that Kavule was seriously weighing prosects of withdrawing Zahara Luyirika from the Kampala Woman MP race (in favour of Shamim Malende) so that she gets deployed in Makindye East having been identified as the only one who can prevent Mabikke or the NRM candidate from winning that Seat.
Responding to all this, Mabikke said on Monday evening that he is prepared to devour whoever Bobi Wine fronts for Makindye East; majority of whose residents he says have resolved to kill him with votes come voting day.
He is looking forward to benefit from the Kavule chaos by welcoming and recruiting whoever gets disappointed with the final outcome-along with hundreds of their respective supporters. He is emboldened by the continuing exodus of pro-Nyeko foot soldiers into his camp as he intensifies his messaging against the apparent confusion and uncertainty inside NUP.
He says he is ready to floor whoever Bobi Wine fronts for Makindye East-be it Nyeko, Mulyanyama or even Zahara Luyirika.
“They have demonstrated more than enough confusion and lack of seriousness regarding the Makindye East MP Seat. What all this shows is their lack of respect for voters of Makindye East. We are going to show them that Makindye East isn’t a laboratory for them to keep carrying out their political experiments on. We are much better than that and that is the message voters are prepared to communicate in the ballot box come voting day,” said Mabikke who was among the earliest NUPians to exhibit dissent against Kyagulanyi’s leadership style.
