Hon. Nyombi Thembo, the UCC Executive Director, has this afternoon (September 4th), through a social media post on X, moved to clarify that UCC’s ongoing actions against bigheaded journalist and blogger, Dean Lubowa Saava are strictly regulatory and not fueled by personal grudges, saying the platform run by Lubowa [TV10 Gano Mazima], faces scrutiny for multiple serious violations, including operating without a broadcast license, illegally installing broadcasting equipment, and failing to comply with Commission directives.
Saava is a social media journalist known for investigative reporting, but his platform has repeatedly aired defamatory content targeting different individuals and institutions, actions which have led to several civil defamation suits, as the motormouth journalist has been unable to back up his corruption claims.
Past threats against UCC officials and his refusal to regularise operations have made him a classic example of skating on thin ice, showing the high price of ignoring rules.
While other media outlets under UCC supervision have managed to regularise operations and continue legally, Lubowa’s refusal left the Commission with no choice but to enforce the law.
According to Thembo, Lubowa’s attacks on him, and the commission were seen as desperate attempts at intimidation, but UCC remains committed to fair and professional enforcement.
Nyombi has warned online media service providers to regularise operations or face similar regulatory action.
Lubowa Saava‘s case is a reminder that trying to run before learning to walk can backfire, and media platforms that ignore UCC regulations risk being grounded and facing strict consequences.
