In the aftermath of the Matayo Kyaligonza saga which saw the NRA veteran lose his temper and physically attack a police officer who tried stopping him for breaching traffic rules, there has been growing curiosity in the public regarding how to identify number plates associated with different government entities and VIPs. Even Ester Namaganda herself, the female traffic officer that was victimized in the incident, says she was confused because she initially was unable to readily establish which organization used such number plates. This has prompted us to run this educative news article highlighting which number plate belongs to which government ministry, department or agency.
THE NUMBER PLATES
Save for LG which represents local governments (districts), all government number plates begin with UG. Then the letter coming at the end is what will vary. The following illustrations clearly make this point: UG 0001B belongs to Office of the President under which constitutional bodies (like Human Rights Commission, Judicial Service Commission, HSC, PSC, Law Reform Commission, Electoral Commission etc). UG 0001C represents State House, partly President’s Office, VP’s office, IGG, ISO, ESO and others. UG 0001D is representative of Defense; UG 0001E MoES & Education Service Commission; UG 0001F Finance Ministry; UG 0001G Internal Affairs; UG 0001H Parliament inclusive of the Office of Auditor General; UG 0001J Ministry of Justice inclusive of Judiciary, DPP & LDC; UG 0001K Energy Ministry; UG 0001L Lands Ministry; UG 0001M Health Ministry; UG 0001N ICT Ministry; UG 0001Q Public Service Ministry; UP 0001 Uganda Police Force; UG 0001R Local Government Ministry inclusive of Local Government Finance Commission; UG 0001S Ministry of Water & Environment; UG 0001T Tourism Ministry; UG 0001U Uganda Prisons; UG 0001I EAC Affairs Ministry; UG 0001W Works Ministry; UG 0001X Foreign Affairs Ministry; UG 0001Y Gender Ministry and UG 0001Z Prime Minister’s Office/Government Chief Whip. CD represents Country Diplomat and such numbers are designated for foreign missions and people working there. For comments, call, text or whatsapp us on 0703164755.
