The Minister of State for Water and Environment, Betty Atim Anywar, at the start of this month (February) inaugurated a new Board of Directors for the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), ushering in a team she said must accelerate Uganda’s drive toward universal access to safe water and sanitation.
The inauguration, held in the first week of February 2026, brought together newly appointed and continuing members, among them former Electoral Commission Chairman Badru Kiggundu, who remains on the board. Anywar challenged the members to steer the corporation in line with the country’s “water and sanitation for all” agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing innovation, efficiency and climate resilience as central pillars of their mandate.
She urged the board to embrace new technologies and cost-effective solutions to expand service delivery while safeguarding sustainability. According to the minister, the growing pressures of urbanization and climate change demand bold leadership and forward-thinking strategies to meet national development goals.
The newly appointed members are Prof. Eng. Dr. Henry Mwanaki Alinaitwe, Ms. Annette Akiror, Ms. Jane Aciro, Mr. Robert Wambedde, Mr. Peter Rwakifaari Kibondo, Mrs. Mariam Mutalaga and Eng. John Twinomujuni. Prof. Alinaitwe, a renowned scholar in engineering circles, was praised as an outstanding academic whose expertise is expected to enrich the corporation’s strategic direction. Stakeholders within the engineering fraternity describe him as a gem whose vast knowledge will be instrumental as NWSC strengthens infrastructure and service delivery systems.
Continuing on the board alongside Dr. Kiggundu are Rt. Hon. Daniel Kidega and Canon Josephine Kasya, providing continuity and institutional memory as the new team takes shape. The minister expressed confidence that the blend of experience and fresh perspectives will position the corporation to deliver tangible results for Ugandans.
Outgoing members Racheal Kiconco Mbabazi, Sarah Onyiru, Rtd Col Stephen Basaliza and Mr. George Runge were commended for their service and contribution during their tenure. Their stewardship, the minister noted, helped lay a foundation upon which the new board will build.
The newly constituted board assumes office at a critical moment as Uganda intensifies efforts to expand water coverage, improve sanitation standards and build systems resilient to climate change. With renewed leadership and a clear mandate, the corporation is expected to accelerate progress toward equitable and sustainable water access across the country.
