Having declined the Bobi Wine assignment to go to Busiro East and antagonize Medard Lubega Segona, Kampala lawyer Kenneth Paul Kakande has resolved to run for EALA MP seat and begin eating things in Arusha as one of Uganda’s 9 representatives in the cash-strapped regional assembly.
Sources say that Kakande has finally concluded that local elective politics was never meant to be his thing because whenever he has stood for Nakawa MP Seat, it ended in tears for him. The last time he tried was 2021 for Nakawa West which he lost to Joel Ssenyonyi of NUP. He too was NUP but was denied the ticket. In 2016, he was trounced by Mike Kabaziguruka and by NRM’s Fred Ruhindi prior to that.
Knowledgeable insiders say that, having realized that Ssenyonyi wields power inside NUP to the extent of influencing who gets the EALA slot, Kakande has lately fully embraced Joel Ssenyonyi’s Nakawa West re-election campaigns in the hope that the man from Nakasongola will reciprocate and be there for him in 2027 for the EALA slot for which Kavule-Kamwokya didn’t send anyone during the 2022 exercise having taken a decision to boycott.
Kakande has significant following and political capital in Nakawa West which can potentially be beneficial to Joel Ssenyonyi who the Musevenists intend to target with special focus come 2026. So, wooing the likes of Kakande fully into his camp is good strategy for Ssenyonyi who actually loses nothing finding some common ground with Kakande, renowned for his eloquence and fiery speeches at opposition gatherings.
Sources say that, given his seniority, Kakande stands a high chance should NUP finally make up its mind and begins to participate in EALA elections. When he declined Busiro East, the principal dangled the prospect of relocating to Kayunga and challenge cracking Minister Amos Lugolobi for the Ntenjeru South MP.
This too proved uncertain prompting Kakade to settle for the EALA deployment for which he is the only one so far to have expressed interest inside NUP.
In fact, Kakande, who serves as the Academic Registrar of some sort, has also leveraged his active participation in facilitating seminars at the NUP’s Kamwokya-based Leadership Academy of the party, to endear himself to Mr. Wine while demonstrating adequate loyalty to the Principal.
The decision to decline being deployed against Medard Segona in Busiro East, scored a lot of points for Kakande amongst sober-minded opposition leaders and supporters including those from other parties who won’t hesitate throwing their weight behind him for the EALA slot.
