For Months, New York City Mayor-Elect [Ugandan Zohran Mamdani] Worked at Monitor Newspaper, Which M7 Hates: HE REMAINS CLOSE TO SR EDITORS

By Mulengera Reporters

A report in a UK newspaper has revealed deep roots New York City Mayor-Elect, the 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani has with Daily Monitor newspaper, on which Gen Museveni recently declared war.

In the year 2007, Zohran’s dad Prof Mahmood Mamdani contacted Angelo Izama, then an influential political affairs editor at Monitor, and begged him to get an internship place for his son, who was then barely 18 years.

The young man, who was always inquisitive about the Ugandan political system and how one man (Museveni) could rule for such a long time, was let in. And he stayed for months under the strict mentorship of Angelo Izama, now a Kampala-based political analyst renowned for his contempt for the Ugandan political system. Joseph Beyanga, a long-serving producer at Kfm, occasionally came in to supplement on Izama’s tutorage efforts.

After several months, towards the dawning of 2008, Zohran ended his time at Monitor and travelled back to New York City where, years later, he was to become an elected assembly member. He would daily come from Prof Mamdani’s home in the upscale Kampala neighbourhood of Muyenga, to Monitor newspaper head offices in the Kampala slummy neighbourhood of Namuwongo.

Even after exiting the training engagement at Daily Monitor, which he used to deliberately deepen his understanding of the Ugandan political system, Zohran remained in close contact with both Izama and Beyanga up to this day.

The duo now says they are not surprised that Zohran (who only became a naturalised US citizen in 2018) has achieved so much in such a short time and made so much history (being the first Muslim to become Mayor of the world’s Capital City) because it was predictable his ambitious character and inquisitive nature would lead him very far.

The UK newspaper article quotes Monitor columnist Nicholas Sengooba as saying that it’s unlikely the ascendance of Zohran (a Ugandan of Asian origin who President Museveni is yet to publicly congratulate and may never congratulate because he is believed to be paranoid about his victory) will immediately cause any change in the behaviour of the Kampala regime, which has been in charge of the country for more than 40 years without a break.

But the trio of Izama, Beyanga and Sengooba are quoted to have said in the UK newspaper that Zohran’s victory will no doubt inspire millions of his fellow Ugandan youths to become even more assertive and more resolved in their demands for a better-governed country back home in Uganda.
