Dear President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni,
I am writing to follow up on my letter dated February 14, 2025, regarding the deteriorating health of Dr. Kiiza Besigye. Unfortunately, the situation remains dire, and I am compelled to reiterate my deep concern.
As you are aware, Dr. Besigye’s recent court appearance sparked widespread worry among Ugandans and the international community. His visible illness and reports of mistreatment in prison are alarming. It is imperative that your government ensures his access to proper medical care, humane treatment, and a fair trial.
Parliament has demanded answers regarding Dr. Besigye’s treatment in Luzira Prison, with lawmakers raising concerns about alleged human rights violations. The Uganda Medical Association and various activists have also voiced concerns that Dr. Besigye’s health is rapidly declining, arguing that he requires specialized medical treatment that Luzira Prison cannot provide.
I urge you to reconsider Dr. Besigye’s detention and ensure that his rights are respected and protected. His release would be a significant step towards healing the wounds of our nation and promoting national reconciliation.
The international community is watching, and the consequences of any harm befalling Dr. Besigye while in custody would be severe. I implore you to take immediate action to address this situation. Sincerely, Defiant Matn. (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
