Referring to leaks he says he has been getting from the ongoing Kyankwanzi retreat for the country’s Resident District Commissioners, veteran journalist Meddie Nsereko has this Wednesday evening told millions of CBS radio listeners that RDCs have been ordered to be on standby and prepared to market candidate Muhoozi Kainerugaba in case Gen Museveni, for some reason, doesn’t make it in 2026.
Nsereko says that his sources indicated to him from Kyankwanzi that Hajji Yunnus Kakande, the influential Permanent Secretary for Office of the President, specifically delivered a message to the RDCs who never expected such. That Kakande, a blue-eyed boy for the President for now more than 30 years and is a man who knows his way around State House, told the RDCs to be ready for anything.
That Hajji Kakande told the RDCs, who he directly supervises, that where things had reached, there was a possibility Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba (the CDF) could end up being the candidate for the ruling NRM party, an not Gen YK Museveni.
Meddie Nsereko said during his Wednesday Kiriza Oba Gana (which featured NRM Director Communications Emmanuel Ddombo, Muwanga Kivumbi and Harold Kaija) that Hajji Yunnus Kakande (his village-mate from Masulita) had told the RDCs there was a possibility Museveni could run but it’s prudent for them to prepare to market Gen MK as an alternative because where things stand right now, anything is possible regarding Museveni’s 2026 candidature or lack of it.
Despite demands on him by the moderator, Ddombo refused to comment on the alleged Kakande utterances tasking RDCs to prepare for candidate MK for as early as 2026, and not 2031, stating that he needs time to first verify the same before he can authoritatively respond to the same.
Along with the NRM district chairpersons from across the country, the RDCs have been at Kyankwanzi since Sunday and the idea is to re-charge and fine-tune them ahead of the 2026 campaigning season commencement.
