During the Thursday evening political program (Kiriza oba Gana) on 89.2 CBS fm, ex-NTV Luganda news anchor Hatma Nalugwa Sekaya sent in her feedback castigating Mityana Woman MP Joyce Bagala, a fellow journlist of equal repute if not more.
Read out loudly by Lameck Kalule who was moderating, Hatma’s written message was to the effect that Bagala has no moral authority to dispute the NUP candidates selection/vetting processes because in 2021 she too had benefited from the same. She described the former NBS Amasengejje news anchor as merely being ungrateful.
She called on Bagala to demonstrate political maturity and patriotism by rallying behind Proscovia Mukisa aka Nabossa who was given the party flag. Appearing on the same show, DP’s Richard Lumu (of Mityana South who is seeking re-election as an independent) claimed that it’s only Bagala who could use the NUP flag to overcome and stop Judith Nabakooba from reclaiming the Mityana Woman MP slot. He added that it will either be Bagala or Nabakooba and not Ms Mukisa.
Lumu, who is allying with Bagala, the outgoing Mityana LC5 Chairman Patrick Mugisha and other independents to stand up against NUP chauvinism in Mityana, also announced a big political launching ceremony that has been organized in Mityana on Sunday at which PFF’s Semujju Nganda will be the guest of honour.
Semujju too was on the CBS program on Thursday and assured the people of Mityana that he will be with them in response to Richard Lumu and Joyce Bagala’s invitation. The trio of Semujju, Bagala and Lumu appear every Thursday except that on this occasion, they were joined by Joel Ssenyonyi who was away in Busoga campaigning with Bobi Wine via telephone link.
Bagala furiously responded to Hatma making it clear that her low-grade kind of comment left her in shock. Bagala said this was not the standard she expected of a senior fellow journalist and news anchor like Hatma. She said the lack of sophistication in Hatma’s comment demonstrated the extent to which media standards in Uganda have fallen.
Hatma also called Bagala a hypocrite because the very NUP vetting process she is now criticizing is how she landed the NUP ticket five years ago in 2021 and yet she never complained anywhere calling the same not good enough.
WE LIBERATED MITYANA, NOT BOBI: Elsewhere during a consultative meeting with her voters in Mityana, Bagala explained that the liberation of Mityana started many years earlier before even Bobi Wine came into the picture. She referred to her 2016 bid when she narrowly lost to Judith Nabakooba: implying that as of 2017 when Kyagulanyi came onto the political scene, the ruling party had already decisively been weakened in Mityana by herself and other fellow opposition activists who had been in the anti-Museveni struggle for decades.
Joyce Bagala equally had no kind words for Joel Ssenyonyi who she tasked to explain what the basis was for her to be dropped in favour of Proscovia Mukisa. She challenged the NUP Party top leadership to release the full details of how the different aspirants scored in the flag bearer races.
She told off Ssenyonyi making it clear that she didn’t even bother putting in an appeal because she can only base her complain on the specific reasons why the EMC disregarded her in favour of Ms Mukisa. She faulted the party for failing to explain why each of the rejected aspirants failed so that appellants specifically get to know what to complain about.
She demanded to see the full script indicating how much she scored on the ground support out of 60% as an indicator of her popularity and on the vetting questions that was marked out of 40%.
