Golf lovers from all corners of Uganda are expected to converge at the Kampala Golf Club this Saturday for the 2025 Kenya Golf Day–Jamhuri Tournament, an event held annually to honour Kenya’s Independence Day.
This year marks the 61st Jamhuri anniversary, and the tournament will once again blend sport, diplomacy, and regional friendship into one colourful celebration.
The event was launched last Thursday at Kampala Golf Club by Kenya’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Ambassador Joash Maangi, who said the 2025 edition is set to deliver even greater excitement than previous years. The unveiling also showcased some of the trophies to be awarded to outstanding golfers during the one-day competition.
Among the key partners backing this year’s event is Equity Bank Uganda, joining Uganda Baati, Kenya Ports Authority and Axian Telecom to ensure a seamless and memorable outing.
Ambassador Maangi said the tournament goes beyond sport, serving as a platform for strengthening bilateral relations and celebrating the region’s shared heritage. He noted that such initiatives are essential in deepening ties and building a stronger, more integrated East African region.
Equity Bank Uganda reaffirmed its commitment to supporting regional cooperation and sporting excellence. Representing the Bank at the launch, Segment Head Personal Banking, Johnson Galabuzi, emphasised that Equity’s support reflects its belief in partnerships that unite communities.
“Our support symbolizes how partnerships and friendship drive us forward in achieving our shared values through sports,” he said before teeing off to signal the start of the tournament build-up.
Kampala Golf Club captain Charles Rukundo announced that this year’s championship will feature only amateur golfers. While there will be no cash prizes due to the absence of professionals, a wide range of assorted gifts and “state-of-the-art” giveaways will be presented across multiple categories. These include Ladies and Men in Groups A, B and C, as well as a guest category for invited players.
The tournament will be played under the Stableford format, a scoring method that awards points on each hole and places emphasis on strong individual performances.
The format keeps players competitive even after a poor hole, and the golfer with the highest number of points at the end of the round will be declared the champion.
