On 26th January 2026, Bradford Ochieng eased out of Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), where he had lucratively been holding the job of Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This has been his place of work for the last six years. He has had the privilege of serving under two CEOs, both of them ladies.
Initially it was under Lilly Ajarova who permitted him to loom large and later on Juliana Kaggwa who somehow trimmed his powers and ensured he didn’t exceed his mandate as Deputy CEO.
As Ajarova came in, Ochieng who had previously worked at PPDA and later on UCDA, competed for the CEO job and performed exceptionally well but Ajarova beat him when it came to the relevant tourism marketing experience.
Having done two terms as Deputy CEO, which he was given to the detriment of Simon Kasyate, Ochieng had to hang his boots and bow out on the account of age, having clocked 60 years. His supporters unsuccessfully lobbied the Board to have him stay around for another three months to be able him clear his desk and generally wind up as the new Deputy CEO is being recruited (it’s expected one of the departmental heads will be tapped to hold the position in acting capacity as the new substantive Deputy CEO is being recruited).
This was all rejected even after Ochieng’s supporters within the sector suggested he had a lot to include in his report and therefore deserved an additional three months to be able to write it properly. There were also suggestions to gift him with UTB’s double cabin he had been using as the official car so that he goes with it as personal property since he doesn’t own any other car.
This too was declined after some uncomfortable Board members threatened to blow the whistle and report the same to the relevant Committee of Parliament and SHACU. It had also been suggested that, since at 60 Ochieng is still physically potent, a senior special consultant role be created for him at UTB but the same was abandoned after the CEO Julian Kaggwa refused to exhibit any appetite for it.
