The Electoral Commission (EC) is actively continuing its national verification exercise for the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Registers, a critical process aimed at strengthening electoral inclusivity and integrity.
The registers cover three key categories: Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), Youth, and Older Persons.
Launched in the middle of this month, the verification exercise is part of the EC’s broader electoral preparation roadmap in anticipation of the forthcoming elections. It is scheduled to conclude on 15th May 2025, marking the final opportunity for eligible members of these groups to confirm or correct their details.
According to the EC, the exercise is intended to ensure that only eligible individuals are included in the SIG registers and that all personal information is accurate and complete.
This process is vital not only for transparency but also for ensuring that no eligible voter is left out, especially from these often marginalized or underserved demographics.
Verification is being conducted at village display centres across the country, and these centres have been set up in each village and parish, where the SIG registers have been publicly displayed.
Eligible individuals are urged to visit the display centres in their respective communities to check and verify their entries. Corrections, including misspelled names, incorrect dates of birth, or missing information, can be made on-site through designated EC officials present at each centre.
In a bid to improve accessibility and adapt to modern needs, the EC has also introduced an online verification portal, where people can conveniently verify their registration status by visiting https://ec.or.ug/register, a secure platform accessible via mobile phones, tablets, or computers.
“This exercise is fundamental in ensuring that all eligible citizens, regardless of age or ability, can actively participate in the democratic process,” said a spokesperson Julius Muchunguzi, adding that “Accurate SIG registers are a cornerstone of credible elections, and we are committed to leaving no one behind.”
The Commission has emphasized that the verification process is not just a bureaucratic formality but a critical civic duty, and by confirming their details, individuals contribute to a more inclusive and representative electoral process.
As the May 15 deadline approaches, the EC is calling on all community leaders, civil society organizations, and local governments to support in mobilizing eligible individuals to take advantage of the remaining days.
The SIGs verification exercise is one of several strategic initiatives the Electoral Commission is undertaking to enhance electoral readiness and uphold its mandate of delivering free, fair, and credible elections for all Ugandans.
