In a bold and unprecedented move, the Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), Hon. Mariam Wangadya, convened a critical meeting on Monday with the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abbas Byakagaba.
The high-level meeting, held at the UHRC headquarters in Kampala on Monday, marks a powerful step towards safeguarding human rights, security, and the integrity of Uganda’s 2026 general elections.
Wangadya emphasized that the success of credible elections hinges on an ironclad partnership between the EC, the Security apparatus, and the Human Rights Unit.
“Only through this united front can we build an electoral environment that truly respects and protects fundamental freedoms,” she declared.
Justice Byabakama welcomed the collaboration as both timely and strategic, affirming that when the EC and other constitutional bodies integrate human rights into their operations, public confidence soars.
IGP Byakagaba made a firm pledge on behalf of the Uganda Police Force to safeguard the rights and security of every Ugandan during the electoral process.
He stressed the inseparable bond between security and human rights, a bond essential for peaceful, free, and fair elections.
Together, these leaders from the EC, Security, and Human Rights Unit vowed to send a clear, unified message: peace, tolerance, and respect must reign supreme.
Their shared commitment aims to ensure every Ugandan exercises their right to vote safely and without fear in 2026.
This alliance signals a new dawn of hope for Uganda’s democracy, where human rights, security, and electoral integrity walk hand in hand.
