Subject: Immediate Resignation from the Democratic Party and Declaration of New Political Path
Dear Party President, National Leaders, and Fellow Members,
I write to you as a loyal but now deeply disillusioned servant of the Democratic Party (DP), having served faithfully as Secretary of Wakiso District. With this letter, I formally and irrevocably resign from all positions and membership in the Democratic Party, effective immediately.
This decision comes after soul-searching reflection, careful observation, and utter disappointment in the current trajectory of the party under the stewardship of Hon. Nobert Mao. What was once a beacon of justice, truth, and principled politics has become a personalized political shell, distant from its founding ideals and shamefully compromised.
Why I Must Leave:
1. Hijacking of Party Structures by Hon. Nobert Mao-The Democratic Party under Mao has degenerated into a one-man show. The recent Delegates Conference was a mockery of internal democracy — tightly controlled, stage-managed, and lacking any genuine engagement with grassroots voices. The will of members was blatantly ignored.
2. Secret Dealings with the NRM
Without consulting us — the very backbone of the party — Hon. Mao secretly signed a dubious cooperation agreement with the ruling NRM, effectively auctioning off the party’s legacy. This betrayal was soon rewarded with a ministerial position, not for the benefit of DP, but for Mao’s personal gain. This same Co- operation agreement was “Kizitalised” in Mbarara forcefully adopting it as a working document of the party without regard to the rest of us. We must call this what it is: political opportunism.
3. Suppression of Democratic Debate
All attempts to raise alternative views within the party have been shut down or met with threats. We no longer have room for diverse voices acase in point is the way your self imposed elecoral commission dog treated all our branch ( NEC) seeking leaders and ensuring that Wakiso branch and greater Mpigi sub region is not represented on your corrupt and compromised National executive.
This suffocating environment can no longer accommodate those of us who believe in freedom of speech, thought and ethical leadership that our founding fathers embressed at the birth of Democratic party in 1954.
4. Loss of Public Trust and Relevance
The DP, once a household name of political morality, now struggles to be taken seriously in national discourse. Our people are confused, our voters demoralized, and our base fragmented. Leadership has failed to rebuild, rebrand, or refocus the party in the face of national crisis.
5. The Search for a True People’s Movement
I am not stepping out of politics — I am stepping back into the kind of politics that puts country before self. I will be joining a new political platform that aligns with the aspirations of millions of Ugandans — a platform that values honesty, dialogue, youth involvement, and national unity above personal elevation.
A Message to Fellow DP Members:
To all comrades still holding on within DP, I respect your courage. But I ask: what future do we really have under a leadership that acts without us and against us? I urge you to reflect critically and honestly. The party is not a monument — it must live through values, not personalities.
Conclusion: This is a painful but necessary departure. I will carry with me the rich lessons and friendships I’ve gained in DP, but I can no longer serve under a structure that no longer represents the people.
Uganda deserves better. And the struggle continues-beyond symbols and slogans.
Yours in service and truth,
Mr. Kibuuka Edwrine
