Dfcu Bank Drops a Cultural Bombshell: Jazz in the Pearl Set to Rock Kampala with Global Icons & Ugandan Legends

By Aggrey Baba

As dfcu Bank marks over 60 years of service to Uganda, its celebration extends beyond finance and into the heart of culture and music. In a bold and beautiful initiative, dfcu is staging Jazz in the Pearl, a high-caliber concert experience set for May 10, 2025, at the Kampala Serena Hotel.

This event promises to be more than just a musical showcase but a tribute to Uganda’s cultural spirit and a testament to dfcu’s enduring commitment to national development.

Mulengera News spoke to Helena Mayanja, Head of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability at dfcu Bank, to delve into the concert’s purpose, the bank’s legacy and what audiences can expect from this one-of-a-kind evening.

Q: dfcu Bank has long been a pillar in Uganda’s financial landscape. Can you walk us through its history and contributions to the country’s development?

Helena Mayanja: dfcu Bank began in 1964 as the Development Finance Company of Uganda, created to finance long-term investments in agriculture, manufacturing, and infrastructure. Over time, we transitioned into a full-fledged commercial bank. Today, we serve a diverse clientele, individuals, SMEs, and large corporations, with innovative, customer-focused solutions.

Some milestones we’re especially proud of include launching our Women in Business programme in 2007, and establishing the dfcu Foundation (formerly the Agribusiness Development Centre) in 2017. Through the Foundation, we support MSMEs, smallholder farmers, and agribusinesses with the goal of generating real social and economic impact.

In 2024, dfcu paid UGX 100 billion in taxes and continues to employ over 1,200 people across Uganda. Beyond finance, we’re committed to culture and community, which is why initiatives like dfcu Jazz in the Pearl mean so much to us.

Q: What inspired dfcu to venture into jazz and cultural sponsorships?

Helena Mayanja: Uganda’s music is a powerful reflection of its cultural diversity, and jazz, though globally influenced, resonates deeply with African rhythms and storytelling.

As a proudly Ugandan brand, we recognize music’s unifying power. Supporting the arts allows us to strengthen cultural identity while connecting communities.

Jazz in the Pearl represents our dedication to nurturing local talent and celebrating Uganda’s contribution to the global music scene. We see it as a gift to our customers, a nod to our heritage, and a bridge to the future.

Q: What makes dfcu Jazz in the Pearl such a special event for attendees?

Helena Mayanja: This is more than a concert, it’s a curated experience. Attendees will enjoy performances by: Isaiah Katumwa – Uganda’s renowned saxophonist, returning from the U.S. for a rare homecoming show. Kirk Whalum – Grammy-winning American jazz legend known for his soulful saxophone melodies.

Tshaka Mayanja & the Black Roots Academy of Soul – Local icons bringing a deep, soulful fusion of African jazz.

The event will offer elegance, sophistication, and the chance to engage with other music lovers in a refined setting. It’s a celebration of Uganda’s global musical footprint.

Q: How can music lovers secure a seat at this much-anticipated concert?

Helena Mayanja: Tickets are already available online through Quicket Uganda. Prices are as follows: General Admission (Early Bird): UGX 250,000 & VIP Table (8 people): UGX 6,000,000. We strongly encourage early booking, as this is expected to be a sold-out affair.

Q: Any final message for those considering attending the event?

Helena Mayanja: If you value good music, community, and culture, this is the place to be. dfcu Jazz in the Pearl will be a night to remember, an ode to Uganda’s vibrant artistic spirit and our shared journey. Come with your friends and family, and let’s make unforgettable memories together.
