He had always been written off as stingy and one who doesn’t easily part with his hard-earned money but NUP Buganda region Deputy President Muwanga Kivumbi, who is also Butambala County MP, proved such doubters wrong on Monday when he cheerfully contributed Shs20m towards the party’s 2026 Protest Vote under which Bobi Wine will once against carry their flag against money bags Gen YK Museveni of the National Resistance Movement.
Being top-earning elected leaders, MPs were hugely targeted but the average each contributed was Shs10m-including Mukono Municipality’s Betty Nambooze who voters would have sent to the political Taiwan as early as 2021 if it wasn’t for the Kyagulanyi wave with which NUP was synonymous.
Kivumbi, who is now a top decision-maker inside the Kavule party, first announced his Shs10m as Butambala MP (where he is assured of re-election courtesy of the Kyagulanyi endorsement) and subsequently another Shs10m in his capacity as the Deputy President for Buganda region.
Rubaga South’s Aloysius Mukasa also did well contributing Shs15m though he will need divine intervention to bounce back as Rubaga South MP. Voters are generally disillusioned that Mukasa has fallen way too short of the high standards his predecessors like Ken Lukyamuzi had set long time ago.
Even recently, Pearl FM, a NUP-affiliated Kampala radio station, conducted its highly consequential opinion polling at whose conclusion Mukasa trailed behind his NUP nemeses namely Euginia Nasolo and Habib Buwembo who has since bowed out of the race in order to concentrate on his new role as national mobilization secretary for NUP. The two shared over 90% of the vote, leaving Mukasa and two other inconsequential aspirants to share the remaining 10%.
This is understood to have greatly dispirited the Principal and other decision makers at Kavule who tend to be keen followers and believers of such polling by Pearl FM, which has been doing this in several other constituencies across the Kampala Metropolitan districts.
In a related development, Bobi Wine has appointed and unveiled the outgoing Nakawa East MP Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga to serve as chairman of the Protest Vote fundraising committee whose work will go on for months heading into the 2026 campaigning period. Balimwezo, who Bobi has fronted for Kampala Lord Mayoral race against the indomitable Erias Lukwago, says he is elated and has promised to exceed his appointing authority’s expectations.
The generosity with which Muwanga Kivumbi contributed greatly disarmed haters who had always characterized him as stingy and one who generally isn’t comfortable contributing to communal causes even when he himself personally benefited from such philanthropy as others contributed for his wellbeing when he was a broke guy of limited financial means.
