Addressing NRM delegates from Busoga at her Buyende home this weekend, Speaker and NRM CEC candidate Anita Among unexpectedly de-escalated things when she refrained from throwing barbs at her rival Rebecca Kadaga.
The Kamuli Woman MP, who was Speaker before her, had days earlier branded Anita Among a thief while urging delegates not to elect such a heavily-sanctioned person to the prestigious position of 2nd National Vice Chairperson for the ruling NRM party.
Kadaga said that Among was a lame duck Speaker who can’t travel to many parts of the world because of sanctions. Wondering how such a crippled person even got nominated for the CEC role, the fearless Kamuli Woman MP added that her successor’s sanctioning had nothing to do with homosexuality but with corruption.
Contrasting that with her own record, Kadaga said she was part of the Speaker’s chambers for 20 years but never stole even a spoon. She said it was deceptive to claim that Among had been sanctioned for bum-sex, making it clear that she resisted homosexuality more vehemently when she was Speaker of Parliament yet she was never sanctioned.
She recalled telling off the Foreign Affairs Minister of Canada during a public gathering in Montreal and no sanctions were ever slapped against her because she had no record of being a thief.
At the Buyende event, Anita Among said she was a well raised child of Uganda who knows the need to respect elders. She said she wasn’t prepared to go bare knuckles on Kadaga, making it clear that she prefers to expend her energy on mobilizing for the NRM.
She stressed a lot about being well possessed with plenty of physical energy, which she said was an asset she was prepared to use to amplify mobilization and harmony inside NRM, similar to what is current prevalent at Parliament-as opposed to demonizing fellow leaders.
She also admitted to being new in NRM, making it clear that this makes her CEC leadership synonymous with new energy and generally a new way of doing things inside the National Resistance Movement. She asked for a chance to get into CEC and demonstrate her leadership at that level.
Anita Among also said that her insistence on publicizing the existence of a financial allocation of donations inside the Speaker’s office and going ahead to use that allocation to financially support struggling Ugandans in all districts is what her rival is resenting and basing on to say she is a thief and corrupt.
Among demanded to know why existence of such money in the Speaker’s chambers was never public knowledge until she became Speaker. To her this shows transparency, which isn’t synonymous with being a thief. She promised to continue using such money, as Speaker of Parliament, to support SACCOs for NRM Chairpersons in all Busoga districts and beyond.
She also spoke about the need to deepen unity among NRM cadres solidly behind the President while encouraging them to treat with respect elderly party leaders like Rebecca Kadaga.
She thanked Moses Magogo for choosing her to be his wife, which had become the basis for her to become part and parcel of the Busoga community. She implied that, unlike the Kamuli Woman MP she is seeking to replace in CEC, she is a development-minded member of Busoga community and promised to deliver tangible transformation as opposed to mere politicking.
She vowed to deliver development and tangible transformation for Busoga in a manner that will put her adversaries to shame, besides causing them to laugh at themselves.
