Renowned empowerment advocate Dr Aisha Ruth Kasolo used the platform of an Iftar dinner hosted by the Chief Justice of Uganda, Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija, to call for stronger support for women’s property rights and financial independence.
Dr Kasolo emphasized that women should have the right to own family property and access loans without needing their husband’s consent. She highlighted that empowering women is crucial for sustaining families and communities, particularly when spouses are away or unable to manage household responsibilities.
Addressing gaps in conventional financial systems, Dr Kasolo noted that while legislation exists to support Islamic financing, many women seeking conventional bank loans encounter obstacles. Married women are often required to secure their husband’s signature even for property that legally belongs to them, a practice she described as restrictive and unfair.
She also drew attention to challenges posed by small-print agreements in financial institutions, which can compromise property rights if not carefully managed. Dr Kasolo stressed the importance of women being vigilant and informed to protect their assets.
Throughout her remarks, she framed empowerment as a tool to strengthen families and communities. She urged women to claim their legal rights, pursue economic independence, and actively participate in leadership and business opportunities. She further encouraged enforcement of supportive legislation to ensure women can thrive in all spheres of life.
Her message resonated strongly with attendees, sparking discussions on gender equity, financial inclusion, and women’s leadership across Uganda. Through this address, Dr Aisha Ruth Kasolo reinforced her role as a leading voice on women’s empowerment and economic rights in the country.
