In a dramatic Easter Monday celebration, the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), led by the First Son and Chief of Defense Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, officially welcomed political heavyweight Dr. Charles Lagu into their ranks—a major political moment for the party. The induction took place on Easter Monday morning at the PLU headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, with Hon. Micheal Mawanda Maranga, the party’s Director of Mobilization and Head of the Disciplinary Committee, leading the festivities.
Hon. Mawanda, the Igara East Bushenyi district Member of Parliament hailed the former Executive Director of the National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB), Dr. Lagu, as a triumph for peace and progress in Uganda. “He has finally come. We know his capacity and the value he adds. We will work closely with him to mobilize support in Madi sub-region,” said Hon. Mawanda, highlighting the trust and long-standing friendship between them.
Dr. Lagu, a former West Moyo Constituency parliamentary contestant on an independent ticket and also a member of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), though he lost the party primaries, praised the PLU as Uganda’s way forward. He committed to focusing on socio-economic transformation in Madi sub-region and the West Nile region, with special attention to youth, women, veterans, and disadvantaged men. He also highlighted key challenges, including high poverty, poor education, and troubling health indicators such as maternal and infant mortality.
Dr. Charles Lagu, a respected veterinarian and animal scientist, began his political career at Makerere University, serving as Interior Minister at University Hall. He was also a Guild Commissioner, a member of the Guild Representative Council (GRC), and a former President of the Uganda Veterinary Association at Makerere University. He serves as the Vice Chairperson for the Entrepreneurs League in Moyo District under the NRM. In the recent 2026 general elections, Dr. Lagu contested for West Moyo Member of Parliament for the first time, securing over 11,000 votes.
Though he emphasized that he is not seeking leadership roles in the PLU, Dr. Lagu expressed readiness to serve wherever needed. Both leaders pledged strong collaboration to promote the PLU’s vision and called on politicians, youth, women, and community leaders to join the movement for Uganda’s future governance.
This festive Easter Monday induction signals a bold new phase for the Patriotic League of Uganda, boosting its influence in West Nile, Madi sub-region, and beyond.
