Kyambogo University Guild President Benjamin Akiso has vowed to take legal action against Vice Chancellor Prof. Eli Katunguka, accusing him of abuse of authority following the suspension of 17 students, including Akiso himself.
Speaking shortly after being granted bail at Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, Akiso, alongside other students, who had been arrested on April 23 for leading a protest against the university’s fees policy, warned Katunguka to “go slow” and respect the law.
“Go slow, Mr. Katunguka. You cannot suspend the Guild President. Our demonstration is lawful, and together with my lawyer, I will deal with you,” he said.
Soon after his release, Akiso led a peaceful march through the streets of Nakawa, joined by fellow students and sympathizers. Though calm, the procession sent a clear message demanding the resignation of the Vice Chancellor and the reversal of the recent suspensions.
The protests were sparked by the university’s new fees policy, which enforces strict payment deadlines and penalties for late tuition. Students argue that the policy is unfair, especially for those from less privileged backgrounds, and have called for more flexible arrangements.
The university administration responded to last week’s protests by suspending 17 students, a decision that has stirred more anger among the student community.
Akiso insists that the move is illegal and an attempt to silence student leadership.
“We are standing for the rights of all students. This university is not a personal property of anyone,” he added. The matter remains tense as the guild leadership prepares to challenge the suspensions in court.
