Uganda Water and Environment Week (UWEWK) 2025 kicked off today, monday, March 17, at the Ministry of Water and Environment headquarters in Luzira, bringing together policymakers, experts, and stakeholders to discuss sustainable water and environmental management.
The week-long event, running under the theme “Water and Environment Resources for Enhanced Resilience and Improved Incomes and Livelihoods,” aims to address key challenges such as climate change, water resource management, and sustainable development.
The Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Justine Kasule Lumumba, who represented Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa as the chief guest, commended the Ministry of Water and Environment for consistently organizing the event over the past eight years. She emphasized that UWEWK is not just a forum for policy discussions but a crucial platform for assessing Uganda’s progress in tackling water and environmental challenges.
She challenged stakeholders to reflect on whether they are meeting the current environmental and water challenges and, if not, to explore solutions collectively. Stressing the importance of collaboration, she urged government agencies and the private sector to work together in addressing these critical issues.
She also called on the Ministry of Water and Environment to ensure efficient use of resources and proper accountability for funds allocated to different projects.
Hon. Lumumba reaffirmed the government’s dedication to supporting the Ministry of Water and Environment, pledging improved resource allocation and strategic investments in environmental sustainability.
She challenged the ministry to ensure proper follow-up on projects to maximize their impact.
As UWEWK 2025 continues throughout the week, stakeholders are expected to draft recommendations that will influence policy development and practical interventions for Uganda’s water and environment sector. The event will culminate in a closing ceremony led by Hon. Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, where key sector outcomes will be presented.
With Uganda facing increasing environmental challenges, UWEWK 2025 provides a platform for fostering collaboration, innovation, and actionable solutions to ensure sustainable development for future generations.
