On Saturday, thousands of people from Teso sub region and other parts of Uganda converged at Soroti Playgrounds to join Mike Mukula in holding the belated NRM day celebrations for his home town.
At the function, Mukula also launched his bid for reelection as NRM Vice Chairman for Eastern Region. In his speech, Mukula went through the history of instability in Teso sub region which he said was now finally stable courtesy of Gen YK Museveni’s efforts.
Mukula recalled moving a motion in Parliament during the 6th Parliament which mandated government to move in and disarm the marauding Karamajongs who were terrorizing Teso and their other neighbors. He added that it was because of his motion in Parliament that a legal framework for the government to compensate his Teso co-ethnics for their lost cattle was put into place.
He then demanded that Museveni’s political opponents like Bobi Wine must understand all this history well before rushing to Teso to politicize the cattle compensation issue. Mukula said he was able to do all this because Gen Museveni was very supportive and has never stopped wishing the best for Teso up to this day.
He dismissed Bobi Wine as a mere opportunist who recently travelled to the sub region to humiliate Teso elders by publicly donating to them his miserable 6 cows yet they deserve much more. Mukula said Kyagulanyi’s efforts to antagonize Museveni with Teso elders will fail and won’t succeed. He said what Mr. Wine did, amounted to humiliating and dehumanizing the people of Teso.
Peter Ogwang, one of the big persons who spoke at the event, agreed with Mukula and declared Mr. Wine a mere political tourist in Teso. Ogwang predicted that Bobi Wine can’t get even 5% of the votes in Teso. He said even in Soroti City, Mr. Wine can’t come anywhere near to defeating Museveni.
“That man is a real conman because he gave our elders just 6 cows yet he went away with gifts, he extorted from our people here, worth much more than the 6 cows he brought,” Ogwang said. Both Mukula and Ogwang implored the Itesots to shun NUP and stick to President Museveni because it’s only him who can solve and address all their grievances relating to livestock compensation and other things.
