With Uganda preparing to introduce the malaria vaccine into its routine immunization schedule on April 1st, the Ministry of Health has intensified efforts to rally support from cultural leaders across the country.
Today, the ministry is holding cultural engagement meetings in Buganda, Rwenzururu (Kasese), Bagwere (Mbale), and West Nile (Arua), seeking to ensure the success of the immunization campaign.
In Nebbi, the Alur Cultural Institution has warmly welcomed the initiative, with its Minister of Health, Dr. Amos Nyathirombo, expressing deep appreciation for the Ministry of Health’s outreach efforts. He acknowledged malaria as the kingdom’s most pressing health challenge and pledged full cooperation to promote a healthier Alur community.
Speaking to the Alur leaders, Dr. Ronald Miria Ocaatre, the Assistant Commissioner for Health Communication, emphasized the crucial role cultural leaders play in disease prevention. He highlighted Uganda’s ongoing battle against multiple health threats, including Ebola, Mpox, and malaria. Urging the leaders to champion the malaria vaccine rollout, he stressed the importance of their influence in shaping public attitudes towards health interventions.
In response, the Alur leaders pledged their unwavering support, vowing to use their platforms to ensure widespread acceptance of the malaria vaccine across the kingdom.
With cultural leaders on board, the Ministry of Health hopes to strengthen public trust and maximize vaccine uptake, ensuring that Uganda takes a significant step forward in the fight against malaria.
