As part of the ongoing preparations to celebrate Kabaka Mutebi’s 25th Coronation Anniversary, Katikkiro Mayiga has been giving many rare media interviews including appearing on Dunstan Busuulwa’s Amaaso ku Ggwanga program on BBS TV. He was hosted on Wednesday night and among the many questions he pronounced himself on was the possibility of running for Presidency someday. “People see you have done a lot of things and been everywhere mobilizing people for development projects. Some are whispering that man might be having his eyes on the Presidency. Is there a possibility this could be true?” Busuulwa asked Mayiga. The Katikkiro spontaneously answered that “I’m a Ugandan and can indeed become President because I qualify.” He added that in fact serving and excelling as Katikkiro is much harder than being President of Uganda implying if he can succeed as Katikkiro, he can equally do so as President of Uganda. The flamboyant Buganda Premier hastened to clarify that nevertheless this isn’t something he has thought about or working for right now. “Kabaka gave me this assignment of co-leading the kingdom and that is what I’m focusing on right now. I like doing one thing at a time because pursuing so many things at once leaves you empty-handed.” This was the first time the flamboyant bureaucrat was discussing this question that continues to be speculated upon with some alleging that, given the cordial relations that have been cultivated in the era of his Katikkiroship, Charles Peter Mayiga is someone President Museveni can do business with including acquiescing to him becoming president immediately after him. That he didn’t out rightly rule out possessing Presidential ambitions during the Busuulwa interview is indicative that the man from Masaka might after all be having something up his sleeve.
