Police have challenged Bukedde TV to substantiate reports that Masaka murder suspect Kamugisha killed more than 100 people, demanding details of the alleged victims and murder scenes to help investigators establish the scale of his suspected crimes.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said detectives were ready to investigate every alleged killing if the state-owned media house shared the information behind its reports, including the identities of the victims, where the murders occurred and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Rusoke was responding to a journalist who asked police to clarify recent reports by Bukedde TV alleging that Kamugisha could have killed more than 100 people.
“If the allegation is that he committed more than 100, because one of you said 100 and another said 180, if it is true, we shall investigate and reach each of those murders,” Rusoke said.
He said police would reach out to Bukedde TV to obtain the leads, adding that even information that was not yet complete could help investigators piece together the alleged crimes.
Rusoke explained that claims involving such a high number of victims required investigators to establish who the deceased were, where they were killed and the circumstances under which their lives were taken.
He said police had already scientifically linked Kamugisha to other murders, citing a killing in Sanga as one of the cases under investigation.
The spokesperson said investigators were prepared to compare the information reported by the media with evidence gathered by detectives to establish whether Kamugisha was connected to additional killings.
Rusoke’s remarks came amid public concern over Kamugisha’s alleged crimes, particularly following his reported confession to eating a victim’s heart.
He stressed that police would pursue credible leads to ensure that any other victims linked to the suspect were identified and that those responsible were held accountable. Investigations into Kamugisha’s alleged crimes remain ongoing, as he lies in Luzira prison on remand.
