The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has graduated 259 staff members in a landmark ceremony aimed at strengthening professional skills and improving service delivery across Uganda’s water sector.
The 6th NWSC Staff Graduation was held at the Ggaba Water Works Complex, where workers who acquired practical skills on the job received formal national recognition under Uganda’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) framework.
Of the graduates, 107 staff members, representing 41.3 percent, attained full occupation qualifications in water treatment, electromechanical systems, water quality management and customer service. Another 152 employees, accounting for 58.6 percent, received certification under the Workers’ Practically Acquired Skills (PAS) programme implemented in partnership with the Uganda Vocational and Technical Assessment Board (UVTAB).
The corporation also recorded its highest female participation rate yet, with women making up 24 percent of the graduating class — a milestone officials described as a sign of growing inclusivity within the utility.
The ceremony was presided over by Allen Kagina, Chairperson of the Uganda TVET Council, who commended NWSC for aligning workplace experience with nationally recognized qualifications.
Kagina said the initiative demonstrated the importance of bridging practical competence with formal certification under the TVET Act, adding that such programmes are critical in building a skilled and competitive workforce.
Speaking at the event, NWSC Board Chairperson Prof. Dr. Eng. Badru Kiggundu challenged the graduates to use their new qualifications to drive innovation and solve real-world problems.
“You have no more excuses. Go out and become problem solvers, innovators, and creators of opportunities,” Kiggundu said, urging staff to embrace excellence, integrity and adaptability.
NWSC Managing Director Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha reiterated the corporation’s commitment to customer-focused service delivery.
“The customer is the reason we are here,” Mugisha said, noting that the corporation’s UGX17 billion cost-reduction strategy had enabled greater investment in Water4All projects aimed at expanding access to clean and safe water.
Officials said the graduation reflects NWSC’s growing emphasis on continuous learning, practical competence and workforce development as the utility seeks to improve efficiency and service delivery nationwide.
