Habitat for Humanity Uganda (HFHU) has appointed four distinguished leaders to its Board of Directors, strengthening its governance and strategic direction as it scales efforts to address Uganda’s growing housing deficit. The appointments bring global and regional expertise spanning development finance, corporate governance, human capital, and private sector transformation—at a time when demand for safe and affordable housing across sub-Saharan Africa continues to rise.
The newly appointed Board Members are:
Agnes Tibayeita Isharaza — Finance & Audit Committee
Ms Isharaza, who brings over 20 years of experience in banking, legal advisory, and corporate governance, with a strong track record in financial oversight and risk management, currently serves as a Corporation Secretary and Chief Legal Officer at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).
Stephen J. Onayit — Human Resources Committee
Dr Onayit brings extensive experience in human capital and organizational development at both the national and international levels. He has held senior leadership roles with global organizations including Oxfam, WWF, and the Aga Khan Foundation, supporting institutional growth and governance reforms across Africa.
Dan Kasirye — Human Resources Committee.
Mr. Kasirye brings over 30 years of experience in development finance, including leadership roles at the World Bank Group/IFC, managing large-scale investment portfolios across East Africa.
Whilst Ms Gwaku has over 20 years of experience driving organizational growth and transformation across Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. She is the Chief Operating Officer of the Private Sector Foundation Uganda and a former global brand strategist at Diageo.
Together, the four leaders (who join the five other Board members) bring nearly a century of combined experience, enhancing the Board’s ability to guide strategy, strengthen partnerships, and drive scalable housing solutions. “As housing challenges intensify across rapidly urbanizing economies, strong governance and strategic leadership are critical. These appointments position us to deepen our impact and expand innovative housing solutions for low-income families,” said Oweek. Chair, Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa, Board HFHU.
Uganda faces a housing deficit of over 2.4 million units, driven by rapid urbanization (5.2% annually) and population growth (3% per year). Rising construction costs, expanding slums, and persistent infrastructure gaps in water, sanitation, and electricity exacerbate the crisis, leaving many households in precarious living conditions. HFHU is working with the government, private sector actors, and development partners to expand access to adequate and affordable housing through building more and better homes, transforming the housing systems and inspiring actions for housing.
