The Buganda Kingdom has once again placed its cultural heritage at the forefront, leveraging sport as a unifying force through its renewed partnership with Airtel Uganda as the Airtel Bika Cup 2026 gets underway.
Held at Wankulukulu Stadium, the tournament’s opening weekend drew thousands, signaling not just the start of a football competition, but a celebration of Buganda’s clan system and identity. Over 52 clans are participating this year, reaffirming the event’s status as one of the kingdom’s most significant cultural platforms.
Officiating the opening, Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga emphasized that the Bika Tournament goes beyond sport. He noted that it plays a central role in preserving traditions, instilling discipline, and strengthening unity among the Kabaka’s subjects.
The partnership with Airtel Uganda, he said, reflects a shared vision of empowering communities while safeguarding cultural values. This collaboration has increasingly positioned the tournament as a bridge between heritage and modern corporate support.
From Airtel’s side, Sales Director Ali Balunywa reiterated the company’s commitment to initiatives that connect people at a grassroots level. He highlighted how the tournament nurtures young talent, offering a pathway for players to advance into professional football and even national representation.
On the pitch, the competition has already delivered excitement, with Musu clan defeating Nte 3-1 and Mmamba edging past Ngeye in tightly contested fixtures. Meanwhile, netball teams have matched the intensity, showcasing the tournament’s diversity and inclusiveness across sports.
As the Airtel Bika Cup progresses through its stages, the focus remains clear: reinforcing Buganda’s cultural identity while creating opportunities for youth and fostering unity through sport.
