A powerful mix of loss, legacy, and determination is unfolding at Victoria University as a new leader steps forward to fill a role left behind by tragedy.
On April 16, 2026, Meera Ruparelia, daughter of Uganda’s richest couple, Sudir and Jyotsna Ruparelia, was officially sworn in as the Representative of the Directors to the University Council. Her appointment marks a significant turning point for the institution, coming nearly a year after the untimely death of her brother, Rajiv Ruparelia.
Rajiv’s life was cut short in the early hours of May 3, 2025, in a devastating crash that stunned the nation. Driving his high-performance Nissan GT-R along the Kajjansi–Munyonyo road, he collided with concrete barriers at the Busabala flyover junction. The vehicle burst into flames, ending the life of a man many believed was destined to lead one of Uganda’s most influential business empires. In a tragic twist, he had been just hours away from attending a high-profile wedding where he was set to serve as a groomsman.
As Managing Director of the Ruparelia Group, Rajiv had played a central role in expanding investments across real estate, hospitality, and education. His influence was especially felt at Victoria University, where he championed hands-on, skills-based learning designed to prepare students for real-world challenges.
Now, Meera Ruparelia takes up the mantle, stepping into a role filled with both expectation and emotion. In her first address to the Council, she pledged to continue the vision her brother passionately pursued. She spoke of innovation, resilience, and a firm commitment to experiential education, with a focus on preparing students for the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
University management has expressed strong confidence in her leadership, describing her appointment as a bold continuation of a powerful legacy.
As the university looks ahead, one thing is certain—this is more than a leadership change.
