Dr. Sarah Bireete has sharply criticized Dr Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu over his call for church leaders to be provided with vehicles, questioning why the faithful’s contributions, often used for massive church buildings, can’t instead support practical needs like clergy transport.
Bireete took to X on Monday to voice her frustration, noting that while church leaders are often revered for their spiritual work, congregations themselves have historically been able to provide for the operational needs of clergy, including transport.
“Why can’t church people who raise money for huge constructions and faithfully pay their tithe and other dues, raise funds for means of transportation for their clergy?” Bireete wrote, further adding that churches used to be self-reliant because of the congregation.
“Why has that changed?” she asked,
Her remarks follow Archbishop Kaziimba’s Palm Sunday message, in which he argued that transportation is not a luxury but a necessity for clergy to effectively reach communities and spread the gospel. The Archbishop stressed that while some perceive vehicles for clergy as unnecessary, they are critical for the church’s work.
Bireete’s post has sparked debate online, with many questioning the priorities of church leadership, particularly the allocation of funds for flashy buildings versus practical tools for ministry.
This is not the first time the conversation over church funding and clergy welfare has stirred public debate, but Bireete’s sharp critique has reignited discussion on accountability and resource allocation within the church.
