A heated debate exploded online after Shudir Byaruhanga raised concerns about a URA container office in downtown Kampala.
The journalist, who works with NTV Uganda, argued that the structure should be removed. He suggested that the tax body could afford to rent space in nearby buildings and relocate, just like other vendors were directed to move to gazetted markets.
But the Uganda Revenue Authority did not stay silent.
URA responded firmly, making it clear that the so-called container is not just a random structure. It is a fully operational tax office serving thousands of taxpayers every day.
The authority revealed that the office was officially opened on June 23, 2024, in Kikuubo, downtown Kampala. Its mission is simple but powerful — bring tax services closer to traders.
The center provides direct support for EFRIS, the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing Solution. It handles tax questions, offers education, and gives guidance to business owners who need help understanding their obligations.
URA says the location is strategic. It sits at the heart of the busy trading hub, making it easy for small business owners to walk in and get help without middlemen.
The goal is to reduce reliance on third-party agents and make tax services faster, clearer, and more transparent.
While the online discussion continues, URA’s message is bold and confident — the office is there to serve the people, boost compliance, and strengthen Uganda’s tax system.
In the middle of the noise, one thing stands out. URA says it is not just placing structures. It is placing services where taxpayers need them most.
