Busiro East MP Medard Segona’s son, Harrison Benjamin Lubega, who prestigiously serves as Head Prefect at one of the leading International Schools in Kampala, says he has an ambition to ever become President of Uganda to help rid the country of bad leadership.

Interacting with journalists on Friday, moments after he had just made an eloquent speech during a public function at his school, the 15-year-old said he considers Uganda to be one country that is not appropriately governed currently. And that he considers it his duty as a citizen to rescue the country should it continue not having a good President by the time he comes of age.

“Right now, I’m still a minor but I’m concerned and I appreciate the need for my country to have a good President, who governs it well,” he said clarifying that in case there is a good President in power by the time he comes of age, he will be more than ready to shelve his personal ambition.

Saying he likes leadership because that is what has been inculcated in him both at home and school, Harrison made it clear that he would be contented standing for an MP Seat to serve his country once what he considers to be a vacuum at the Presidency level ceases.

The young man, who was full of praises for his mum Dr. Diana Justine Lubega and dad Medard Segona for being his sole source of inspiration, also bragged about what he considers to be his biggest personal achievement so far, namely the writing of a book titled “Start Small, Dream Big.” He said this was launched and it’s already a publication in existence.

To him, being able to pull off such a major accomplishment when still a minor, is indicative of the fact that there is nothing his God can fail to enable him achieve, including becoming President of Uganda some day. His great leadership credentials also manifested when he managed to cajole fellow students to make him head prefect at the elite school, he is currently enrolled at for his secondary education, when he had barely spent one week in the school.

He is such a gem, the speech he made before parents, teachers, fellow students and other stakeholders or invited guests, including media cameras, left many convinced that he is actually more eloquent than more a quarter of the representatives in Uganda’s current 11th Parliament, which boasts of more than 530 members.

In his brief interaction with media reporters on the sidelines of the major event at his school, Harrison also called upon the authority people in Uganda to consider raising the minimum requirements for one to become an MP in Uganda; from the current UACE/S6 certificate to a University degree.

Saying there is a lot one learns from the formal schooling system, including character-formation, which contributes to the good leader they eventually become, Harrison says at least one should have operated and been inducted under a post-S6 setting for 5 years. He says there should be no excuse for anyone in Uganda not to be formally educated.

The young man’s comments come at the time his dad is facing off with several others to secure re-election as Busiro East MP, including Mathias Walukagga who was recently denominated by the Electoral Commission ostensibly for lack of the minimum academic qualifications.

To his credit, the 15-year-old Harrison proved intellectually sophisticated enough when he resisted scribes’ efforts to get him comment about the political dispute between his dad, Mathias Walukagga and others fighting for the political soul of Busiro East.

The clarity with which he made his speech, and subsequently addressed reporters, created the impression that with future leaders like him, Uganda’s political tomorrow will be much better than it presently is.
