Before her retirement a few years ago, Prof Maria Musoke served as the Chief Librarian for Makerere University and she held this top management position for many years. On retirement a few years ago, she retreated to her modest residence in Wakiso (near district headquarters) as she looked around for short term consultancy contracts. One of the ways in which she looked for new opportunities was to apply for the job of Kyambogo DVC Academic Affairs and this being the chaotic Kyambogo, the recruitment process took forever to be concluded. The post of DVC AA fell vacant following the dramatic elevation of Prof Elly Katunguka to the position of full VC which had been vacant since the departure of Kenyan Professor Isaiah Omollo Ndiege. Musoke was in the end selected as the best candidate for the job, a decision the governing council endorsed and approved during their Thursday meeting at the University and Maria Musoke has since been smiling from ear to ear like a politician who has just won a very difficult election contest.
Her pay cheque will be good (over Shs15m), there are many allowances, a posh vehicle, a body guard, a driver, a posh office, travel opportunities and a nice house all at the cost of the University. Musoke is a team player and a reformist leader going by her track record as University librarian at Makerere. And gratefully she will be working under the supervision of Katunguka, a colleague she perfectly worked with at Makerere. Among those who had initially showed interest in the post include Prof J Aguti of the College of Education at Makerere, Mak’s Prof Mukasa Mugaga and Prof Hunnington Sengendo, a brother to Prof Yusuf Nsibambi. Having thoroughly thumped Prof Abdul Mpata (of IUIU), Prof Fabian Nabugomu is also back for 2nd term as DVC Finance and Administration. This now leaves Prof Katunguka with fewer excuses in case he fails to perform to expected standards. For comments, call/text/whatsapp us on 0703164755!
