[Little by little, one travels far], says an old proverb, and on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, the first cohort of graduates from the Equity Leaders Program (ELP) proved this truth at a celebration held at Church House in Kampala. The ELP, which launched in Uganda in 2022, was designed to identify and nurture the country’s top-performing students through mentorship, leadership training, and paid internships with Equity Bank.

This unique initiative selects high-achieving UACE students from each district where the bank operates, offering them a pathway to leadership development while they pursue their university education. These young scholars have not only excelled in their studies but also gained hands-on experience in leadership, preparing them to take on transformative roles in their communities.

The event was a reflection of their journey, marked by hard work, perseverance, and the promise of a brighter future ahead.

Leading the event was Elizabeth Wahito, the Acting Head of Public Sector & Social Investment at Equity Bank, who has been a guiding force for the scholars since the program began. She highlighted the tremendous progress made by the first graduates, acknowledging their dedication and the important role they will play in shaping Uganda’s future.

Kevin Nandase Wagubi, the Head of Human Resources at Equity Bank, shared words of pride and encouragement for the graduates. “You’ve inspired others to join and learn from your journey, and we take pride in what you’ve achieved. You chose to walk this path with us, and today, we celebrate not just your success as students, but as colleagues,” she said.

Godfrey Kamau, Equity Group Director of Operations, addressed the graduates, emphasizing the leadership qualities they had demonstrated throughout the program. “You’ve shown responsibility, persistence, and action, qualities that define great leaders,” he said. Kamau applauded them for staying focused and overcoming challenges, and for their contributions to both their universities and to the success of Equity Bank.

The newly appointed MD of Equity Bank, Gift Shoko, also took a moment to express his gratitude to the graduates, referring to them as the “first fruits” of the program. He commended their commitment and urged them to continue striving for excellence. “You have set the standard for future cohorts. Keep striving for greatness and transform your communities,” Shoko advised. He also expressed appreciation for the visionary leadership of Group CEO, Dr. James Mwangi, who conceived the program and has played a pivotal role in its success.

The graduates received their congratulatory certificates from Gift Shoko, marking the culmination of three years of hard work and dedication.

With their eyes set on the future, these scholars now stand as role models for the next generation, ready to lead with integrity and drive positive change in Uganda.
